Gossip more than just talk at Showbox

GOSSIP
SHOWBOX AT THE MARKET
October 9

Thank heaven for big girls! Beth Ditto, who proudly shows off her full figure in fashion-mag spreads, is boldly telling the world that plus-size women are indeed beautiful. She also possesses one of the most soulful voices in rock music, quite reminiscent of Ann Wilson.

Ditto, the front lady of Portland-based trio Gossip, is infectious up close. At The Showbox Market on Tuesday night before an almost sold-out crowd, she spoke regularly and candidly about this and that - and gave a shout-out to the Approve Referendum 74 campaign for marriage equality.

'Everybody vote, please!' she yelled over rapturous applause. 'For all of us!' she continued. Ditto herself is engaged to girlfriend Kristen Ogata.

In between numbers on the band's set list, like a very danceable and fun version of 'Moving in the Right Direction,' Ditto captivated the audience with humorous banter. At one point she dedicated a song to Lil' Wayne because, she admitted, she's obsessed with him.

Gossip was terrific on this night, playing a mix of new and older favorites. While Ditto clasped her husky vocals onto each tune, like 'Get a Job' and 'Love Long Distance,' drummer Hannah Blilie - in a black tank with punky hair and tats on both arms - pounded away on drums. Guitarist Nathan Howdeshell reservedly provided the driving riffs, such as those on 'Standing in the Way of Control,' that allowed concertgoers to turn the show into a danceathon. A bassist and keyboardist were also on stage.

In a knee-length black dress, at first strapped in with a glittery belt and then removed after the first song, Ditto was a cross between glamorous and edgy. Her jet-black hair was neatly wound in a bun with dark brown bangs combed forward. She was in top form when she busted through 'Perfect World,' and together with a dose of sprightly keyboard elements she turned 'Four Letter Word' into a club track.

The best-received song of the night had to be 'Heavy Cross,' still being used for a J'Adore Dior perfume commercial starring Charlize Theron. It definitely got people moving in every direction.

It took three years for Gossip to return to Seattle. Fingers crossed we aren't made to wait another three.
