R-74 opponents urged to disinvite Santorum

Former senator to fundraise for anti-equality campaign

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The Approve R-74 campaign for marriage equality is calling on its opponents to withdraw an invitation to former U.S. senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum.

Santorum is scheduled to appear at two fundraisers for the anti-equality group Preserve Marriage Washington, one on October 9 and another the next day.

'To bring Santorum here in the final weeks of this election season is both mean-spirited and ill-advised,' Washington United for Marriage campaign manager Zach Silk said in a statement released October 4.

'There isn't a living politician who has built his bona fides more on the backs of Gay and Lesbian Americans than Rick Santorum. This is someone who has likened same-sex marriage to the tragedies of 9/11, calling it the 'ultimate homeland security' issue. If [Preserve Marriage Washington is] committed to the rhetoric on their website and spouted endlessly across the state, they should cancel these events and tell Rick Santorum he is not welcome in Washington.'

Silk also released a four-page memorandum detailing Santorum's extremist views on LGBT issues. Inviting Santorum to headline two events refutes Preserve Marriage's claims that they respect LGBT people, Silk added.

A two-term U.S. senator, Santorum built a reputation for being outside the mainstream of national politics. As a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination this cycle, he linked himself to the Tea Party and religious opponents of reproductive choice and LGBT rights.

Chris Barron, political director for the Log Cabin Republicans, said of him in 2004, 'I think that Rick Santorum is the face of exclusion and intolerance. I think that if we are going to maintain our status as the majority party in this country then we can't be led by folks like Rick Santorum.'

'MAN ON DOG'
Among the Santorum quotes Silk cited in his compilation is this 2006 classic: 'In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. It's not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.'

Silk also noted Santorum's notorious observation on Lesbian parents - that 'even fathers in jail who had abandoned their kids were still better than no father at all to have in their children's lives.'

Same-sex marriage, Santorum said this year, means 'robbing children of something they need, they deserve, they have a right to. You may rationalize that that isn't true, but in your own life and in your own heart, you know it's true.'

Santorum also co-sponsored amendments to the U.S. Constitution in 2004 and 2005 that would have banned same-sex marriage.

Santorum is even against Gay people having consensual sex, Silk notes.

'If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual [Gay] sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything,' Santorum said in 2003.

'While [Preserve Marriage's] current opposition to R-74 puts a rosy spin on their position, with a lot of talk about respecting their Gay and Lesbian neighbors, bringing Santorum here should finally put that ruse to bed,' Silk wrote.

Choosing to headline Santorum, he said, 'only underscores our lead opponents' true colors.'
