Marital acts - Arouet's Lawfully Wedded seeks to challenge your worldview

by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

LAWFULLY WEDDED
AROUET
October 4-17

Roy Arauz's company, Arouet, is mounting a special effort designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding marriage equality. Titled Lawfully Wedded, this evening of short pieces (which he terms 'micro-plays') also includes original poetry and music.

Arauz described for SGN how the project came to be.

'Daniel Cords is studying anthropology at UW Bothell and there's an emphasis in Gay Studies, and part of his schoolwork was to interview people and run surveys on Gay marriage. He's been doing a lot of research on Gay relationships. Back in March, he and I were having a conversation about the work he was doing. I thought it would be totally a fun play to do. Once the referendum came about, we decided we had to do it. We're using his research as a basis. We can't use actual stories that were told, for privacy reasons, but they were used as a launching point.

'Every week, the writing team gets a topic and has a week to write something that addresses that issue. Sometimes it's a story, sometimes it's statistics. That's been the inspiration for plays, poetry, and music.

'Some of the pieces might make people uncomfortable, and that's what I'm interested in. I want to challenge people's beliefs in what love and marriage are. I want you in the audience to judge and then question what you're fighting for. One piece we're considering is about a straight couple who are swingers and want to swing with a Gay couple. The Gay couple judges them and is horrified by the situation. But that's exactly what 'they' say about Gay marriage, that it's disgusting.'

The project, says Arauz, is 'not a soapbox to say we're right, but it's all just opinion and we all judge. It's just a different aspect of love. If a 52-year-old guy is dating a 22-year-old gal, who are we to judge that? Why is it when it's two men it's so alarming, but it's been so accepted for heterosexual couples?

'There will be pieces that will have you laughing. It will run the gamut.

'Barbie Humphrey, the face of Purr, has been a huge supporter of Gay rights and Gay marriage, and she has given us free rehearsal space and is throwing a party for us, so we'll fundraise for Washington United for Marriage [the Approve R-74 campaign].'

Lawfully Wedded is a featured event of Arts Crush, the month-long Puget Sound arts festival (info at www.artscrush.org). Participating playwrights include Greg Bee, Caitlin Gilman, and Morgan Ludlow, and participating actors include Jeremy Behrens, Alysha Curry, Bruce Erickson, Addie Keller, Idalia Limón, Eric Olson, and Carissa Meisner Smit. Also featured is original music by Perry Fulfs.
