Statement by Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington on the PDC decision

Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington, the statewide group of church-going Catholics who support the state's marriage law and are working to Approve Referendum 74 this fall, today hailed the decision by the Public Disclosure Commission, which said Bishop Tyson's calls for donations to marriage opponents amounted to 'bundling,' which is not allowed under state finance laws.

The decision by the PDC followed a letter from the Bishop of the Yakima Diocese in Washington State to 41 parishes asking that they collect envelopes from their parishioners that would then be forwarded to Preserve Marriage Washington, the campaign seeking to overturn the bipartisan marriage law.

'We are delighted by this ruling because we represent so many Catholics in those pews who not only find political fundraising inappropriate for their Sunday services, but also strongly disagree with the Bishop's stance,' said Barbara Guzzo, spokesperson for Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington. 'We believe we should all be able to practice our faith without pressure from our Bishop or our parish priests to support an effort we oppose.'

Guzzo noted that in the Pew Research Center's June 2012 polling, Catholics approve same-sex marriage by a wide margin of 58 percent.

'The truth is our Bishops are not representing the majority of Catholics who do not see eye-to-eye on this central question,' said Guzzo.

Vote for Marriage Equality. APPROVE Referendum 74!
