Frank Ocean lands 3 VMA nominations

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer Frank Ocean opened his tour here in Seattle last month, and his star is definitely rising. Earlier this week, the R&B newcomer snagged three MTV Video Music Award nominations - Best New Artist, Best Male Video, and Best Direction - all for the video of 'Swim Good.' Rihanna and Drake received the most noms - six apiece - and Katy Perry, like Ocean, nabbed three.

Overall, this year's VMA nods are a mess of predictable big names and annoying teen sensations, a sign that MTV cares more about ratings than creativity. This aside from the fact that the cable music network rarely shows videos anymore. The Moonman statues will be given out September 6 at L.A.'s Staples Center. Ocean, of course, stirred the hip-hop world recently by revealing that he had had an intimate relationship with another man.

Not long ago, the band Gossip interviewed with SGN to promote its latest album, A Joyful Noise. The trio, featuring two Lesbian members (Beth Ditto, Hannah Blilie), are following up the release of their new record with a 13-city North American tour that includes a Seattle date on October 9 at The Showbox Market. Tickets have already gone on sale, and you'd better act quickly because this concert will indeed sell out.

Other just-announced shows include FreakNight (Morgan Page, Nicky Romero, Noisia) on October 26 (WaMu Theater), Grammy-winning jazz/R&B artist George Benson on September 20 (Snoqualmie Casino Ballroom), and pop duo Matt & Kim on October 30 (The Neptune).

Bumbershoot update: Platinum and Gold passes are now sold out for Saturday. Also, Rudy's Barbershop, with seven locations in Seattle and a new setup in New York City, is the festival's official fee-free ticket outlet. If you buy your Bumbershoot tickets at Rudy's, you'll not only avoid extra charges but you'll also be automatically entered to win a 'golden ticket' that comes with VIP privileges. As previously announced, the Labor Day weekend festival features Gotye, Jane's Addiction, Tony Bennett, Skrillex, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Passion Pit, Keane, M83, Big Sean featuring Mac Miller, and dozens more. There has been one cancellation so far: The Greenhornes will not appear.

Kaskade was named 'America's Best DJ for 2011' by DJ Times magazine, an honor not lost on those who follow electronic music because the talent pool is deep in the United States. The ex-Mormon and former record store owner recently sold out the Staples Center in Los Angeles, a huge feat for any entertainer. Kaskade (real name Ryan Raddon) is expected to interview with me in the days ahead, and if this happens you'll see it in next week's issue. He'll play the WaMu on August 10.
