Franz Ferdinand returning to Seattle this fall

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It's been three looooooong years. September 8, 2009, was the last time Franz Ferdinand appeared in Seattle, when they played a double bill at Bumbershoot with Modest Mouse. They're headed back, finally! The rock-electro quartet, who've interviewed twice with SGN, will perform August 9 at the Showbox Market. Franz Ferdinand (Alex Kapranos, Nicholas McCarthy, Robert Hardy, and Paul Thomson) are putting out a new album in 2012, although details haven't been released yet.

'Take Me Out,' 'Ulysses,' 'Michael,' 'No You Girls,' and 'The Dark of the Matinee' are a few of the hits produced by this Scottish act. Tickets for Franz Ferdinand go on sale June 1. Visit www.aeglive.com/artists/view/395/Franz-Ferdinand for ticket details.

Here come the Shins! With a new record in tow, Port of Morrow, the Grammy-nominated band is returning to Seattle for a live performance at the Paramount Theatre. The September 22 show is the first of a 12-city jaunt this fall, following a summer tour that includes both North American and European dates. The Shins are most recognized for their international smash 'New Slang,' featured in a McDonald's TV ad during the Beijing Olympics. Tickets for the September concert go on sale May 31 (10 a.m.). Get more information at www.stgpresents.org.

The Capitol Hill Block Party has added Allen Stone, Beat Connection, Don't Talk to the Cops, The Briefs, Grand Archives, Gold Leaves, and Ava Luna to the festival lineup. Previously announced acts include Neko Case, Fitz and the Tantrums, Major Lazer, and Diplo. The CHBP also expands this year with a brand new stage, live online broadcast, short-film contest, bloggers' lounge, and family activities. The full lineup for the July 20-22 event is available at www.capitolhillblockparty.com.

I spoke with Brandi Carlile this week in an interview to be featured in our special Pride Music issue next month. The openly Lesbian artist, who resides in Maple Valley, discussed her rise to success, from doing gigs at local bars and clubs to performing on the same stage, the same night, with Willie Nelson and Norah Jones. She also shared her memories of attending Seattle Pride over the years, as both a spectator and festival participant. Carlile is set to release her new album, Bear Creek, on June 5 and is promoting it with tour dates running through the winter holidays, including back-to-back hometown appearances with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall on November 23 and 24. Grab a copy of SGN on June 22, when Brandi Carlile helps us celebrate Pride.

You snooze, you lose. These live shows are now sold out: The xx on July 25 (Showbox Market), Sleep on July 3 and 4 (Neumos), and Sigur Ros on August 8 (Paramount).

Finally, I'm announcing three more interviews in the coming weeks. One of them is with a band headlining at the Tacoma Dome in late summer. Be ready!
