Pride Idol week 8: Ricky rules

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

There are moments during live shows when the audience and the entertainer are as one. The energy is palpable, the applause is genuine, and the performers can do no wrong. That is exactly what happened May 27, during the last qualifying round of competition to be 2012 Pride Idol. The 10 contestants were absolutely amazing and because week 8 was so hard to judge, SO&P officials decided to advance three people to the Wildcard Round, instead of the usual one. In a word, the 2012 season of Pride Idol has been amazing.

Smirnoff, Seattle's Best Karaoke, Neighbours Seattle, Seattle Gay News, and MOViN 92.5 present Seattle Pride Idol.

Pride Idol is a citywide singing contest hosted by Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P), running every Sunday night at Neighbours leading up to Pride. The Grand Finale is scheduled for June 10, when a winner will be chosen as Seattle's 2012 Pride Idol!

The multi-talented BenDeLaCreme performed a hilarious lip-sync parody and joined the judges' panel of Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Sister of Perpetual Indulgence Yuriko Lomein, and me as we voted to advance three contestants to the Wildcard Round and another to the finals.

A returning contestant, the soulful Michael Allen, brought everyone to church with an a cappella performance of 'His Eye is on the Sparrow.' Allen, who is no stranger to the Pride Idol stage, always delivers and we can't wait to see what he will bring this Sunday for the Wildcard Round!

Each year, there's a contestant who comes from out of nowhere to blow the audience away. This year, that contestant is Kyle Bain. Performing an original rap, 'Watchu Lookin' At,' while wearing a 'drag casual' cheerleader uniform, Kyle won over both the audience and the judges. With a wonderful personality, a hilarious act, and a way with words, Kyle is a contestant to watch out for next week.

With an amazing vocal performance of Christina Aguilera's 'Ain't No Other Man,' Leighton Grampp earned a standing ovation from the audience and a perfect score from me. She won a spot in the Wilcard Round.

The contestant who advanced to the Finale, Ricky, also came from out of nowhere. Working in human resources by day and singing his heart out by night, Ricky is one of the best vocalists we've ever seen at Idol. Flawlessly singing 'When You Say You Love Me,' by Josh Groban, Ricky proved that he is the one to beat at this year's Finale. He will return this week to perform as a guest entertainer.

This year's Grand Finale prize package is very attractive: $200 will go to third place, $500 to second place, and first prize is $1,000 and a chance to perform aboard the Seattle Out and Proud float during the Seattle Pride Parade June 24. Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P) produces Seattle's annual Pride Parade.
