Silva shines in Idol week 6
by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

In a city overflowing with talent - and talent competitions sprouting up like weeds - 2012 Pride Idol is making its mark! Overall the 2012 season has been amazing, but the last two weeks in particular have catapulted Pride Idol into a league of its own. Simply put, the Wildcard Round and Grand Finale are poised to be the best yet!

Smirnoff, Seattle's Best Karaoke, Neighbours Seattle, Seattle Gay News, and MOViN 92.5 present Seattle Pride Idol.

The 2012 Pride Idol is a citywide singing contest hosted by Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P), running every Sunday night at Neighbours Seattle leading up to 2012 Seattle Pride. Doors open at 6 p.m. for open karaoke, hosted by SO&P's Eric Bennett. Contestants must sign up by 7:30 p.m. in order to compete at 8 p.m., when the show begins. The Grand Finale is scheduled for June 10, when a winner will be chosen as Seattle's 2012 Pride Idol!

The 2012 season kicked off on April 1 with a bang, and week six had 12 competitors (many of them returning from previous rounds of competition) vying for the top slot. Returning as host, Gaysha Starr looked as glamorous and fun as ever. Mama Tits, Seattle's Skyscraper drag queen (host of Elektro Pop and Mimosas With Mama), performed a hilarious Jackie Beat ABBA remix and joined the judging panel of Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (Salena Go-Lez), Sister of Perpetual Indulgence Domine Trix, and me as we voted to advance one contestant to the Wildcard Round and another to the finals.

Ryan Crawford, Pride Idol alumnus and 2012 Pride Idol week 4 winner, opened the show. Crawford - who has performed on the Idol stage many times - is always a joy to watch. His talent, coupled with his charm and physique, is a delight.

This week, Janson Halloway (returning from last week) advanced to the Wildcard Round after receiving high scores from the judges for tackling the Bruno Mars hit, "Just the Way You Are."

Also advancing the to June 3 Wildcard Round, returning from last year's competition, was Christina Brewer. Brewer's voice, appearance, and poise were all on point as she delivered an amazing version of the late Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

Chase Silva simply stole the show. Chase and those "eyebrows for days" won over the judges and audience alike with an amazing performance of the late Amy Winehouse's "Me and Mr. Jones." He advances to the June 10 Pride Idol finals.

Each week there is a nightly prize of $100 for first place and a spot in the Wildcard Round for second place. Who's going to take home the Pride Idol trophy and prizes this year? Why not you? You can sign up in person the night of the competition or online at www.seattlepride.org/idol-register.html. There is a $10 fee to enter the contest.

This year's Grand Finale prize package is very attractive: $200 will go to third place, $500 to second place, and first prize is $1,000 and a chance to perform aboard the Seattle Out and Proud float during the Seattle Pride Parade June 24. Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P) produces Seattle's annual Pride parade. Come out and sing! Show us what you've got and become Seattle's next Pride Idol!
