posted Friday, May 4, 2012 - Volume 40 Issue 18 Seattle Parks reaches out to LGBTQ teens with a prom eventby Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor Seattle Parks and Recreation and Born This Way Kafé are hosting a Purple Prom on May 19, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Miller Community Center (330 19th Ave. E.). According to Karen O'Connor, a spokesperson for Seattle Parks, the Purple Prom is an event for all Queer youth, friends, and allies age 14 to 20. Metro routes 8, 12, and 43, serve Miller Community Center with Metro routes 11 and 48 nearby. 'The evening offers live DJs, a great dancing opportunity, food, and fun,' said O'Connor is a press release. Youth can obtain free tickets by visiting www.brownpapertickets.com/event/243179. It is important to note that the event capacity is 100 people and requires advance tickets. Born That Way Kafé is a component of Seattle Parks and Recreation's LGBTQ youth programming. The program goals focus on the creating safe and community based connections between LGBTQ youth within their neighborhoods. Environments like Born This Way Kafé help nurture healthy LGBTQ youth and pave the way for civic engagement with the greater community. These LGBTQ programs work with the youth in these communities to bridge perceived differences and to build common ground. This LGBTQ programs are central to identifying and working with these communities to decrease the programming gap to LGBTQ youth.
