Marine charged in fellow Marine's death
Police say suspect used anti-Gay slur

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Police in Washington, D.C., say one Marine stabbed another Marine, Philip Bushong, to death last week. The two men fought after the suspect used an anti-Gay slur to refer to the victim.

The alleged homicide occurred early on the morning of April 21 on Barracks Row, a neighborhood near the Marine Barracks in Southeast Washington. According to the police, the suspect is 20-year-old Michael Joseph Poth - a resident of the barracks.

A spokesman for the Marines, Capt. John Norton, said Bushong's death is 'obviously a tragedy' and said the Marines are 'cooperating with local authorities.'

Police believe the two men did not know each other before the fight.

OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT U.S. military personnel and one of the largest LGBT employee resource groups in the world, released a statement on Bushong's death, saying, 'We are deeply saddened by the death of Lance Corporal Phil Bushong at the hands of a fellow Marine. We are troubled by the specter that this might have been a hate crime; if so, we anticipate the authorities will pursue it to the fullest extent of the law. This is particularly upsetting since, overall, Gay and Lesbian Marines have been accepted and treated equally in the force since repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' We look forward to the results of a swift and thorough investigation of this tragic incident.'
