Northwest Bears' Spring Thaw XVIII

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Northwest Bears held its annual Spring Thaw the weekend of April 19-22. The event, now in its 18th year, raised more than $4,500 for Seattle Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).

In addition to cocktail hours at participating bars like the Cuff Complex, Diesel, and C.C. Attle's, Spring Thaw XVIII offered a cruise on Elliot Bay, an 'UnderBear' party at C.C. Attle's, and the Furnace Dance at Cuff Complex, spun by DJ Matt Stands (Bearracuda) and DJ Rob (Harbour City Bears).

As always, this year's Spring Thaw wasn't just for locals. The weekend of events saw patrons visiting from California and Oregon, as well as Canada and Europe.

'Each year at the September members' meeting, Northwest Bears selects a charity for the coming year. For 2010, our charity was Lambert House. For 2011, it was the Safe Schools Coalition,' said Pete Winowitch, president of Northwest Bears. 'For 2012, the charity is Seattle PFLAG. I am proud to have been involved with this organization raising money for these very worthy charities.'

Additional sponsorship of the event came from the Cuff Complex and Steamworks. Additional fundraising efforts came courtesy of Quake Rugby and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey of St. Joan. Northwest Bears is a Gay men's social and service organization. Its purpose is to provide a focal point within the Gay community for bears and bear admirers.
