posted Friday, April 27, 2012 - Volume 40 Issue 17 Pride Idol doubles down in week fourby Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor Seattle Pride Idol, presented by Smirnoff, Seattle's Best Karaoke, Neighbours Seattle, Seattle Gay News, and MOViN 92.5, is back for week four. This week, three contestants came out to sing not one, but two songs for the judges and audience. The 2012 Pride Idol is a citywide singing contest hosted by Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P), running every Sunday night at Neighbours Seattle leading up to 2012 Seattle Pride. Doors open at 6 p.m. for open karaoke, hosted by SO&P's Eric Bennett. Contestants must sign up by 7:30 p.m. in order to compete at 8 p.m., when the show begins. The grand finale is scheduled for June 10, where a winner will be chosen as Seattle's 2012 Pride Idol! The 2012 season kicked off on April 1 with a bang, and week four proved that this year's competition is top notch. Returning to host was the fabulous Gaysha Starr, who opened the show with a lip-sync performance of an Inaya Day dance mix. The amazing and talented DJ Almond Brown joined the judging panel of Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (who performed 'Maybe This Time' by Liza Minnelli), Sister of Perpetual Indulgence Domine Trix, and me as we voted to advance one contestant to the wildcard round and another to the grand finale. Returning vocalist Chris Godwin gave it another shot - and he nearly nailed it this time. Chris sang Elton John's 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' and The Righteous Brothers' 'Unchained Melody.' There is no doubt that Chris can sing. With a little vocal control and the right song choice, he could eventually advance to the Wildcard or Finals. Although that did not happen Sunday, we do hope that he comes back to give it another go. The animated and talented Jason Quisenberry brought his vocal prowess with the intention of going all the way as he belted 'I Can't Make You Love Me' by Bonnie Raitt and 'Believe' by Cher, securing him this week's Wildcard slot. Folks, I cannot stress enough - it is all about song choice. Jason wowed the judges with the first song, but it was the over-the-top 'Believe' that stopped him from advancing to the Finals. Jason will have one more chance to impress the judges on June 3 at the Wildcard round and prove that he could be the next Pride Idol. Ryan Crawford, Pride Idol alumni and all-around great guy, was back in action on Sunday. Last week, Ryan won the Wildcard slot but decided he wanted his slot in the finale sooner rather than later. Always the consummate performer, Ryan works dancing, style, and fun into every round he is a part of, and the audience and judges - even the other contestants - love him for it. On Sunday, Ryan won the coveted spot after he performed George Michael's 'Faith' and Tori Amos' 'Taxi Ride.' Each week there is a nightly prize of $100 for first place and a spot in the wildcard round for second place. Who's going to take home the Pride Idol trophy and prizes this year? Why not you? You can sign up in person the night of the competition or online at www.seattlepride.org/idol-register.html. There is a $10 fee to enter the contest. This year's grand finale prize package is very attractive: $200 will go to third place, $500 to second place, and first prize is $1,000 and a chance to perform aboard the Seattle Out and Proud float during the Seattle Pride Parade June 24. Seattle Out and Proud (SO&P) produces Seattle's annual pride parade. Come out and sing! Show us what you've got and become Seattle's next Pride Idol! |
