Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Social Justice Bus Tour Brings Message of Acceptance to Denver Area
LAKEWOOD, CO - Today, members of Soulforce's 'Equality Ride' and a member of the Denver community were arrested at Colorado Christian University for attempting to engage in a Bible study on campus around 1:45 p.m. Soulforce's 'Equality Ride' -- a national social justice bus tour promoting acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and allied people to discriminatory evangelical colleges and universities -- is in Colorado for it's eighth stop of the tour across country. The individuals arrested are currently being held in custody at the local Lakewood Police station, and are expecting to receive a citation and release later this evening.
Ryan Barnette, a rider from Ohio said that Soulforce had hoped to be invited onto campus for an open discussion and dialogue at some point during the day. 'We are making this direct action today because we've been contacted by students at Colorado Christian University who have informed us of the need for conversation about the discrimination toward the LGBTQ and allied people on campus.'
Colorado Christian University had refused to meet with the 'Equality Ride' during their time in Colorado to discuss their policies. During the direct action piece riders spread affirming messages at the main entrance to the campus while emphasizing a need for dialogue with students, staff, faculty, and administration. The protest is being followed by a potluck supper at House for All Sinners and Saints at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to the public. The "Equality Ride" will be in Colorado through April 20, when it will then travel to Salt Lake City for its ninth leg of the tour.
