Barney Frank to marry boyfriend
by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank plans to marry his boyfriend, Jim Ready, the Congressman's office says. The couple will marry in Massachusetts.

That much was confirmed by Frank's spokesperson Harry Gural in an email to SGN, but Gural declined to offer any specific details of the couple's plans.

Frank, who has announced his intention to retire from Congress at the end of his current term, lives in Newton, Massachusetts. Ready lives in Maine where same-sex marriage is not legal.

Although Ready has appeared with Frank at public events, he has tried to keep himself out of the spotlight.

According to Frank, the two met at a Maine political event in October 2005. Ready was partnered at the time, but his partner subsequently died. In 2007, the two began a relationship.

'I'm in love for the first time in my life,' Frank told Charlie Rose in an interview.

Shortly after they began their relationship, Ready was arrested at his Maine home for growing marijuana in his back yard. Frank was reportedly at the house when police arrived.

'I told him that our relationship could not develop if he could not promise me that he would not repeat this,' Frank said later. 'He apologized, with great sincerity I believe, and he made that promise and has lived up to it.'

Frank says he makes a point of appearing with Ready at public events.

'It's one thing to say 'I'm not prejudiced against a person who is a Gay,' he told the Boston Globe in an interview.

'It's an entirely different matter to accept that person in their personal relationships. So over the past five years or so, Jimmy - my partner - and I have made it a point to attend events together, to go to public places as a couple. It's important that people see that.'

Frank first won election to Congress in 1980 after serving in the Massachusetts legislature. He came out as Gay in 1987.

Shortly after coming out, Frank met and began dating Herb Moses, an economist and LGBT activist. Their relationship lasted for eleven years until an amicable break-up in July 1998.
