'FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY' BROUGHT DOWN PREVIOUS COMMUNITY CENTER
I read the article by Shaun Knittel about Ms. Van Cleve and the newly proposed LGBT Center [Activist Van Cleve says proposed LGBT center should focus on seniors, issue 47, volume 39, 11/25/11], and want to make it clear about statements that the community withdrew their support for the Seattle LGBT Community Center, causing the organization to fall. This is only partially correct.

I believe it is important to state, from the perspective of someone who was involved with the ill-fated Broadway Pride Parade committee, that it was not the parade that brought them down so much as fiscal irresponsibility and shortsightedness by the then-executive director and their board. There was already a significant budget deficit at the time of the decision to sponsor the parade, and everyone involved in the decision making was adamant that a Broadway event be self-funded if it was to occur.

Every one of us on the volunteer pride committee was charged with obtaining sponsorship and donations enough to fund the event entirely, without impacting the Community Center's budget and resources. We raised all of the money required to pay for the celebration, but that money was used to pay back wages for their executive director instead of the bills for the parade; a decision made without consent from the board or committee members and one that was ultimately the final nail in their coffin. This kind of fiscal mismanagement was the reason they lost the support of the community, in addition to the divisiveness between our organization and SOAP over where the event should be held, and not simply because the center put all its resources into the parade on Broadway and the celebrations at Volunteer Park.

As for the reformation of a new LGBT Community Center, it is certainly overdue and something our community needs, but the work to rebuild trust in the community will require a steadfast commitment from everyone involved. Ms. Van Cleve was on the mark when she stated, 'The key to rebuilding trust and support for the new center will be a clear vision and mission statement and a strong board of directors who represent the community and who run the place with a firm hand.' I sincerely hope that she will be directly involved in that process, and look forward to the announcement of our community center's rebirth.

Sincerely,
D. M. Cavalier
