Dina Martina is back to make the holidays surreal

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Dina Martina Christmas Show
Re-Bar
Through December 31

There is no doubt about it: the holiday season has arrived. The air has chilled, Christmas trees are sprouting up around the city, and the one and only Dina Martina is performing her Christmas show at Re-Bar (1114 Howell St.).

Seattle has had a love affair with Dina for years - especially during the holidays. It just doesn't seem like Christmas - or 'Chrishmash,' as Dina calls it - until our beloved Dina makes us laugh until we pee, shudder at the not-so-pitch-perfect vocals, and dance with excitement as visions of bad makeup run through our heads.

This year's Dina Martina Christmas Show delivers, just like in years past. It doesn't matter how many times you see her, she's still as funny as ever. Dina's ace accompanist Chris Jeffries joins her once again, the bar staff dons their Dina Martina Christmas vests, and Dina's outfits still don't fit. But the real fun is always in the music. Dina sings and dances - both horribly, mind you - her way into your dreams (or nightmares, depending on how you look at it).

The best way to see a Dina Martina show is with a Dina virgin. No, really - it's amazing. I love bringing a friend along to watch them as they try their damnedest to figure out what the hell is going on. Then, slowly but surely, just as I did, they get it. Dina is just plain silly, and in a world - and a season - when everyone is a bit too serious, she is just what the doctor ordered. Drop the eggnog and get your tickets today!

Be warned: The shows will sell out, so order your tickets online at www.brownpapertickets.com early. Re-Bar does not accept credit cards at the bar, so bring cash. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Matinees begin at 2 p.m., doors at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Unwittingly hilarious and wonderfully bizarre, Dina Martina is the chanteuse with the leastest; the dancer with the hunchfront; the childlike lady who, year after year, is the holiday gift that truly keeps on giving. Brimming with botched carols, ungraceful dances, overburdened costumes, and truly bizarre audience gifts, this all-new holiday extravaganza is the triumphant return of Dina Martina's sidesplitting blend of lowbrow, top-notch comedy and near-acid-trip surrealism.
