Kate Clinton brings plenty of laughs
by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

Kate Clinton
October 28
Benaroya Hall

There were laughs aplenty at Kate Clinton's standup event last Friday at Benaroya Hall, and lots of familiar faces were on hand, including our own local funny lady, Lisa Koch.

Kate Clinton's delivery is a colloquial ramble full of silliness, audience interactions (people feel very free to yell stuff at the stage), and her take on all sorts of issues of the day. Her current tour is called the 'Glee-party tour' which she said stands for the show Glee (she adds how afraid the character Sue Sylvester makes her) and the Tea Party.

She then went on to refer to the 'teabaggers,' especially noting how her girlfriend, Urvashi, didn't like her to use the term. She loves to do what her girlfriend says she oughtn't. Kate said her girlfriend thinks Kate is jealous of the tea party. Why? Because the Tea Party is destroying the Republican Party, and that's what Kate wanted to do!

Referencing the current penchant for Republicans to balance the budget 'just as households have to,' Kate said that she and Urvashi never really manage to balance their budget. They do, however, pretend to be Republicans who can't balance the budget, and give up and say 'I know, let's ban abortion.'

In talking about how our U.S. financial rating went from AAA to AA, she referenced Alcoholics Anonymous and that we need to acknowledge we are powerless over our finances and they have become unmanageable.

Kate referred to the GOP as both 'Republican'ts' and 'the obstinace-only party' and said their debates are a reverse American Idol contest; they keep adding people instead of voting them off. She listed Rick 'Santmoron,' who talks about man-on-dog sex and says that Gay marriage is their firewall between people and pets. Herman Cain is the pizza guy. She commented on how Rick Perry now doesn't want to debate because he'd have to use complete sentences and say something. Michelle Bachmann is 'the Skymall of useless ideas,' and there is Mitt 'corporations are people' Romney. Kate made fun of Paul Ryan wanting to give Social Security vouchers. She asked, 'Has he met seniors?' Seniors, she said, would just misplace them.

Kate suggested that Arizonans have been sucking their air conditioners too long, and the Freon is going to their brains, and that's what's made them crazy enough to pass those anti-immigration laws. She made fun of the anchor-baby concept as she demonstrated pregnant women in labor backing up against the border (to deliver their babies backward over the border).

Another fun thread had to do with Kate becoming an app-maker, though she is admittedly very low tech. She created a 'Rapture' app: it tells you where to go for going-away parties when others get Raptured and promises that 'we'll take care of your stuff for you.' She says the Vatican has gotten into the app-making arena, also. They have an app for confession - 'Think Outside the Box.' Kate also says that Pope Benedict now uses Twitter. His first tweet: 'OMG.'

This is just some of the fun in her 90-minute gig, which earned her a standing ovation and an encore. You might want to go to kateclinton.com or explore her nine books and three CDs, and watch for a return engagement in 2012 for the next opportunity to hear her in person.
