GLSEN Washington looking for volunteers

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Are you interested in making schools safer for all students and staff regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression? Do you want to give back to your community? Did you have a bad experience in middle or high school because you were teased, bullied, or harassed? Then GLSEN Washington State wants your help.

GLSEN Washington State works across the state with educators, GSA advisors, and students to make their school communities safer for everyone. GLSEN does this important work through volunteers in three outstanding committees.

The first, the student organizing committee, supports students at the school level. This committee plans and implements programs to connect mentors with GSA clubs to support and connect the GSAs to GLSEN, the community and the state.

The second, the fund development committee, will meet to look for grant opportunities and to help organize fundraisers for the group. GLSEN understands that in order to be supportive to the students and advisors that they help, they need to have a healthy budget.

Lastly, the professional development committee is in charge of training teachers, advisors, school staff, and community members while supplying them with resources in order to create a safer and more supportive school environment for the youth.

In addition, GLSEN Washington State offers opportunities for short-term and long-term internships in the Seattle office. Interns may join GLSEN on an academic schedule: for the entire year, for a semester, or for the summer. Internships generally vary based on your educational institution and are unpaid.

If you are interested in volunteering with GLSEN Washington State on any of these committees you can email our Volunteer Coordinator: andi@wagsa.org or you can attend our committee meeting on August 21, at the GLSEN Washington State office (1605 12th Ave., Suite 35). Parking is limited at the office, but there is street parking available.
