VETERANS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS 'ELATED' BY DADT END
I am elated that the president, the secretary of defense, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have all approved Certification today [22 July, 2011]. With this action, in 60 days, all U.S. military members can be treated like valued team members, and not like second-class citizens.

'Certification' is part of the process outlined in the legislation passed by Congress on 18 Dec 2010, and signed by the president on 21 December 2010, to end 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' (DADT). 'Certification' means that all U.S. military forces have been trained on the end of DADT, and that no impediments exist to making the change. The legislation also stipulated a 60-day waiting period after 'Certification.' When the end of DADT becomes official and final on 20 September 2011, the United States will join all other NATO nations (except Turkey) in defending freedom, without regard to sexual orientation. On that date, the U.S. military forces can stop wasting the time, talent, and tax-dollars that have been expended in the discharge of about 13,500 trained, qualified, capable military personnel since the inception of DADT in 1993.

Founded in 1993, Portland-based Veterans for Human Rights (VFHR) is dedicated tom serving the needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) U.S. military veterans. VFHR has provided the Color Guard for the Portland Pride parade each year since 1996.

Joshua Tagliere, president of Portland-based Veterans for Human Rights
