OMD, The Drums interviews on deck

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), the '80s synth-pop band who rose to fame when their single 'If You Leave' was used in the John Hughes film Pretty in Pink, are currently on a comeback trail. The group's original members - Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper, and Malcolm Holmes - have released a new album, History of Modern, and are backing it with a full European and North American tour. The road outing includes a Seattle date on September 29, at The Showbox SoDo. Besides the quartet's signature hit, they enjoyed success with the international singles 'Secret,' 'Electricity,' and 'So in Love.' An interview with OMD will print here in 'The Music Lounge' next month.

Another artist set to interview in The Music Lounge is Brooklyn-based dreamy pop band The Drums. Their song 'Let's Go Surfing' was played overhead just before Katy Perry stepped onstage at Key Arena in July - we can assume she's a fan. I find the group's sound to be somewhere between The Beach Boys and Joy Division, and that's a very good thing. The Drums play The Crocodile (www.thecrocodile.com) on October 12. Look for an interview with this trio of dapper, spunky, and musically entertaining young men in early October.

Band of Horses, once based in Seattle and once barflies at the Crescent Tavern, are returning to Seattle for a performance at the Paramount Theatre on September 13. The Grammy-nominated band was originally scheduled to open for Kings of Leon at Key Arena the night before, but the entire KOL tour was canceled due to lead singer Caleb Followill's reported drinking problem - a hot mess, for sure. Tickets for Band of Horses should be on sale now at www.stgpresents.org. The indie unit, now relocated in South Carolina, used to slam cheap beers at the Crescent, according to Ben Bridwell when he interviewed with me a few years ago.

Adele, Lil Wayne, Young the Giant, and Chris Brown will perform on the MTV VMAs telecast on August 28. Expect more artists - likely Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, The Foo Fighters, and The Black Keys - to be added to the lineup. I'll preview the big awards bash on August 26.

You snooze, you lose. The following shows are now sold out: Deadmau5 on August 18 (Paramount Theatre), Foster the People on October 9 (The Showbox SoDo), and Skrillex on October 25 (The Showbox SoDo).
