Pagliacci Pizza mourns the accidental death of Broadway store manager

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The crew at the popular Capitol Hill Pagliacci Pizza restaurant (426 Broadway E.) learned of the sad news that their store manager, Tyrone Fabroa, had died. Fabroa, 35, was out on Lake Washington with his 19-year-old brother, when he fell from his rented stand-up paddleboard and drowned August 1.

According to the Marine Rescue and Dive Unit of the King County Sheriff's Office, Fabroa drowned around 11:25 a.m. despite having an inflatable life vest on his waist and the efforts of two people who saw him struggling from the shore and attempted to save him.

Sgt. Jim Knauss classified Fabroa's death as a 'tragic accident.'

'Falling into water is not as forgiving as falling off a skateboard,' said Knauss. 'Mother Nature is pretty powerful.'

Fabroa was a well-known face at the Broadway Pagliacci Pizza, which he'd been running for the past year. The location is one of the company's busiest, serving pizza by the slice on Capitol Hill since 1983, and is a fixture in the neighborhood. 'It's gone through a few different facelifts,' Shelley McNulty, marketing director for Pagliacci, told Seattle Gay News. 'Although Tyrone was not Gay, he fit in well with our company because we do not discriminate and have always hired LGBT employees and have supported the community since 1979, when the company began.'

Pagliacci has been supportive of not only Capitol Hill, but also the citywide Pride celebration.

'Tyrone had been with the company for nice years,' said McNulty.

'We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tyrone,' she said. 'He was a big part of the Pagliacci family. This has been tough on everybody - especially for the Broadway location - and we will just miss him.'

A funeral was held for Fabroa on August 9. McNulty told SGN that the company did its best to staff the Broadway store with team members from other locations 'so all the Broadway crew could attend his funeral service.'
