The second annual Seattle Gay Prom

by Joshua Michael Rumley - SGN Contributing Writer

This wasn't a typical prom; the glittery evening gowns often came with an individual with pretty clear five-o' clock shadow, Robin from the Batman comics sashayed her way around the room, and there wasn't just one queen of the prom - one could say there was a whole room full of them.

The second annual 'Born This Way' Seattle Gay Prom united and celebrated the Seattle LGBT community this past weekend at one of Seattle's newest hotspots, Velvet. The event was organized as a fundraiser to send the Seattle Stonewall FC, the competitive soccer team in the Rain City Soccer Club, to the 2011 OutGames in Vancouver, B.C. In addition, the event raised nearly $4,000 for Rise N' Shine, a local organization that offers programs to children living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

'Being able to hand them a check for $4,000 was just icing on the prom cake,' said event organizer Tyler Juel. 'We are looking forward to playing a larger role in the future as we continue to grow the relationship to support their mission and programs.'

LGBT proms have grown in popularity over the past decade as the Gay and Lesbian equality movement has progressed, allowing for a greater acceptance of the community. Many LGBT individuals feel that the social restraints of high school didn't allow them to have the prom they desired to have.

'Gay Prom, for us, is the opportunity to dance the night away with the person we all wished we could have in high school,' said Juel. 'Besides, who doesn't love a fun dance party that supports a wonderful cause, and you don't have to spike the punch to get a cocktail?'
