Rick Santorum to Rick Perry: I'm more anti-Gay than you are!

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Rick Santorum sparred with Rick Perry on July 22 over who is more anti-Gay.

Texas Governor Perry told the anti-Gay American Family Association that his state would not follow the lead of New York in legalizing same-sex marriage.

'Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex,' Perry said.

'And you know what? That's New York, and that's their business, and that's fine with me. That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.'

Perry told the cheering AFA crowd that he's still an 'unapologetic social conservative.'

Prominently mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate, Perry said he would make a decision about running within the next three or four weeks.

Santorum, an already declared candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, decided that Perry's position was not anti-Gay enough.

'So, Gov. Perry, if a state wanted to allow polygamy or if they chose to deny heterosexuals the right to marry, would that be OK, too?' Santorum tweeted.

He ended his message with the hashtag #tcot, which stands for 'top conservatives on Twitter.'

Perry did not respond to Santorum, who long ago staked out the traditional right-wing position that equates same-sex marriage to polygamy, incest, and bestiality.

In terms of Republican presidential politics, Perry hardly needs to respond to Santorum's swipe.

Perry has more than a 10-point lead on Santorum in multiple polls and Santorum has only some $500,000 in his campaign coffers.

Two recent polls released show Perry a close second to frontrunner Mitt Romney. Michele Bachmann places third behind both men. Santorum trails the field with only 2% of the respondents.

Perry also has a long record of anti-Gay positions that could easily rival Santorum's.

Perry spokesperson Mark Miner confirmed Perry's 'support of a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman & the Texas Defense of Marriage Act and a state constitutional amendment defining traditional marriage.'

'Nothing has changed with the governor's philosophy here,' Miner said.

Running for reelection as Texas governor in 2010, Perry shouted to a campaign rally, 'Would you rather live in a state like this, or in a state where a man can marry a man?'

Perry also continues to support the Texas anti-sodomy law which was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas (2003).

In 2008, Perry defended the Boy Scouts for excluding Gay scouts and scoutmasters because 'precious few parents enroll their boys in the Scouts to get a crash course in sexual orientation.'
