C.C. Attle's, Madison Pub, R Place come together to 'serve' Gay troops

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

They come from as far away as Fort Lewis (and sometimes farther) in car loads, by Amtrak train, or bus to 'the city' to live out loud and proud for a weekend. Their haircuts are noticeable, their build is, well & built, and they walk with a swagger. They are Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines. The not-so-few, the very proud: Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual active-duty service members.

Sometimes they gain access to local nightlife hot spots with a flash of a military I.D., other times they still feel the need to hide and use a driver's license. With the top brass miles away and DADT behind them, the Gay bars and clubs that adorn Capitol Hill are refuge for our brave men and women of the service.

On Friday, July 15, three community bars responded with an open door, no cover, drink specials, and a party just for them. C.C. Attle's, Madison Pub, and R Place held the first ever OutMilitary.com Pub Crawl party, sponsored by ABSOLUT vodka, and it was a huge success.

OutMilitary.com is a new social network for LGBT service members created in response to the repeal of DADT. OutMilitary.com provides a supportive environment for 'friending,' sharing, and networking between active duty military, vets, and supporters around the world.

The social network has seen tremendous growth, with upwards of 50 new members joining each day.

'The site is similar to popular networks with regards to functionality and usability,' said John McKinnon, publisher of OutMilitary.com. 'The site provides a supportive ecosystem to find friends, plan events, share photos, and post in forums.'

With its membership base on the rise and its user-friendly layout, OutMilitary.com has already been reported on by Reuters, ABC News, the Huffington Post, and Sirius XM, to name a few outlets.

OutMilitary.com is a 'walled garden.' They are encouraged to design their profile page to specifically fit their personality by adding photos, video, and text. Members can chat via chatrooms or one-on-one. More than just a meeting place for LGBT service members and their supports, OutMilitary.com is also a source for news and updates on an array of topics tailored for the military community. Members can blog, chat, and connect with one another in a supportive environment.

OutMilitary.com has become the go-to place for the nearly 65,000 active duty Gay servicemen and women and an estimated 1 million LGBT veterans.

The Seattle pub crawl will be used as a model for other OutMilitary.com parties around the country.

The pub crawl kicked off at C.C. Attle's, where a number of active-duty and retired service members joined two members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Abbey of St. Joan - Sister Karma ZaBetch and Christiana Metroform (both veterans) - for a the first leg of the crawl.

Next up was Madison Pub, where the bar staff donned Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force T-shirts. The crowded pub was a great place for veterans and active-duty members to get to know one another in a supportive atmosphere.

The dance party and last stop for the pub crawl was R Place. Beginning with Lashes Cabaret, hosted by the amazing drag entertainer Lady Chablis, the night took off with excitement and energy like none other. The go-go boys, bar staff, and patrons showed full support for OutMilitary.com and its active-duty members. A number of Gay troops could be found dancing the night away until 2 a.m., when the party came to a close.

'This is great,' said one active duty soldier of the R Place party, who wished not to be identified in print due to DADT. 'There are a lot of troops here. We love this place. OutMilitary.com seems like a really good site to join. I'm going to make a profile tomorrow.'

And he did. A lot of partygoers made profiles over the weekend. Remember, OutMilitary.com isn't just for service members; it's for their supporters, too.

'We come here [R Place] all the time, but tonight there was no cover charge for military and that is really awesome,' said a Lesbian sailor, who also wished to remain anonymous due to DADT. 'It feels really good to be welcomed in this way. I'm on OutMilitary.com and I love it.'
