Alexis Mateo comes to Seattle

by Anthony Greer - SGN Staff Writer

Bam!
R Place
July 29-30

Alexis Mateo from RuPaul's Drag Race's third season will be performing at R Place on July 29 and 30.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Alexis Mateo studied dance and choreography at the Jazz-Aero Dance Academy and is also a former tenor singer of the award-winning Interamerican University of Puerto Rico choir.

Shortly after, she moved to Orlando and became a performer at Disney World, where she danced with many stars including Diana DeGarmo, Jennifer Holliday, Mariah Carey, and Michael Bolton.

One day, one of her roommates wanted to try a talent show and convinced Alexis to dress up for the first time. She ended up winning and was told that she should consider trying to make a career of it.

She also won a copious amount of pageants and beauty titles before auditioning and landing a role on Drag Race. When Drag Race first started, Alexis auditioned for but didn't make the show. She tried again in the second season, and finally the producers thought she'd be a good fit in their third-season cast.

On Drag Race, Alexis shined time and time again, winning three of the main challenges and making it all the way to the final three.

Some of the most memorable moments on the show were her performances as a Twinbot opposite Shangela in episode three, 'Queens in Space,' her celebrity impersonation of Alicia Keys, her high-energy lip synch to Amii Stewart's 'Knock on Wood' that made Stacy Layne Matthews sashay away, her hilarious performance as an anchor for 'QNN,' and her infamous workout video in episode four, 'Totally Leotarded,' where she was declared the main challenge winner for the second week in a row.

A unique aspect of Drag Race was that while Mateo is Puerto Rican, she wasn't the only one. She found herself sharing her background with Yara Sofia, who at one point lived only five minutes from her in Puerto Rico. In an interview she confessed that at first she was upset about having to share her uniqueness with another queen, but once the two got to know each other, they became really good friends and have performed together after the show on occasion.

While there was a lot of cattiness on the show itself, Alexis stated that all of the girls were amazing in different ways - even those who separated the queens into two groups: 'The Heathers' and 'The Boogers.'

She was also very pleased to meet RuPaul in person. She said that Puerto Rico's Gay scene wasn't very large and RuPaul was the only drag queen she'd seen because of the music and videos that she was in. Alexis thought that RuPaul was very nice in person and talked to the queens like human beings, even when they were asked to sashay away. Over all, she doesn't regret anything while on Drag Race because she finally got to meet RuPaul.

According to her publicist, this will be Alexis Mateo's first time in Seattle, and she's very much looking forward to it. She is also currently planning a traveling Christmas show with fellow Drag Race alums Mariah and Yara Sofia. More information on that will be updated on her website, www.AlexisMateo.net.

The show at R Place is titled Bam! Doors will open at 8 p.m., the performances start at 9, and tickets are limited and on sale now at www.brownpapertickets.com. General admission is $15, VIP is $25.
