Chaz Bono, Colfer, Lynch, Gaga receive Emmy noms

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Among the nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards is Transgender author and producer Chaz Bono, who boldly captured his identity transformation on camera. Becoming Chaz was recognized in the Outstanding Nonfiction Special category.

The nominations were announced bright and early Thursday morning, with Modern Family and Glee nabbing several nominations for their openly Gay stars, or actors portraying non-hetero characters. Four cast members of the former sitcom - Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, and Ed O'Neill - are in the running for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Comedy. Ferguson (out in real life) and Stonestreet (straight and married) play on-screen couple Mitchell and Cameron on the popular series. Nathan Lane, a multiple Tony Award-winner, was singled out for his guest appearance on Modern Family.

Competing for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Comedy as well is Glee's Chris Colfer, whose character Kurt Hummel continued to be harassed at McKinley High for his sexuality to the extent of transferring to another school, which led to a romance in the form of his first boyfriend Blaine (Darren Criss). Colfer's co-star Jane Lynch, who plays the intimidating, track suit-wearing Sue Sylvester, earned her second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress, Comedy. Lynch won last year's award, and coincidently will host the Emmys this time around. Dot-Marie Jones, who entered Glee's second season as the school's beefy football coach, is nominated for Guest Actress, Comedy. Jones lives quietly and happily with her lifetime partner. Glee, by the way, is also contending for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Jim Parsons, another 2010 Emmy winner, is up again for Lead Actor, Comedy in The Big Bang Theory. While not officially out, Parsons is regularly seen with his boyfriend at Hollywood events and Gay-las.

Mysteriously, perennial favorite Neil Patrick Harris was overlooked for his work on How I Met Your Mother.

On the drama side, Gay stage-turned-television actor Alan Cumming received a nod for his supporting role in The Good Wife.

Out director Todd Haynes scored a nod for helming the much-lauded Mildred Pierce special on HBO. Jeremy Podeswa, also openly Gay, is up for Outstanding Directing, Drama for helming the 'Anastasia' episode of Boardwalk Empire.

Lady Gaga could add an Emmy statue to her awards stash, as her televised concert Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden is nominated for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special. She'll compete against fellow pop diva Bette Midler, whose HBO special The Showgirl Must Go On was mentioned in the same category.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 18.
