Katy Perry inescapable and infectious

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Katy Perry
July 20
Key Arena

You can't run from Katy Perry. She's everywhere.

When the pop superstar isn't sitting atop the Billboard charts, she's making headlines for another out-there getup, or lending her voice to a pair of upcoming animated films (The Smurfs, The Muppets), or releasing the latest in a string of addictive hit singles. Her newest, 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),' goes down almost as easily as a pitcher of spiked Kool-Aid.

Even more infectious is the visual accompaniment to that song, featuring an all-star cast of has-beens from Corey Feldman to the Hanson brothers to Kenny G blasting his sax on a rooftop. Perry also stars in the music video as a retainer-wearing geek who transforms, with the help of Rebecca Black, into a neon-clad hot mama. As of this week, it's been viewed nearly 48 million times on YouTube.

It's this fun, off-kilter energy and consistently great songs that have earned Perry a huge following, making her a household name around the world with just two albums under her belt. And she got there with a little help from her Gay friends, because behind every successful pop diva there's an audience of fashion-conscious men.

Perry is quick to return the love, and was among the first celebrities to post a congratulatory message on Twitter when New York's same-sex marriage bill passed. The 26-year-old entertainer further displayed her support by attending the Big Apple's Gay Pride parade last month, and was spotted with a mini rainbow flag clutched in her hand.

In an interview last year with The Advocate, Perry stated that she prefers hanging out at Gay bars to straight ones. 'I like Gay bars better than straight bars because you don't feel like you have to trade a blowjob for a drink; you just have to smile and do a twirl,' she told the magazine.

Needless to say, Wednesday night's concert at Key Arena - Perry's first Seattle stop since Bumbershoot two years ago - should see its fair share of Gay fans. The show, part of 'The California Dreams Tour 2011,' is a tightly wrapped, candy-themed production that includes all the familiar favorites: 'E.T.,' 'I Kissed a Girl,' 'Fireworks,' 'Waking Up in Vegas,' 'California Gurls,' and 'Teenage Dream,' to name a few.

Taylor Swift will likely not appear for a surprise duet, as she'll be in Newark on the same night - she and Perry sang 'Hot 'n' Cold' at a recent Swift concert in L.A. But do expect a cover song or two - fingers crossed for Perry's punkish version of The Outfield's 'Your Love,' though here's hoping she omits the Whitney Houston number ('I Wanna Dance With Somebody') from her two-hour performance.

At press time, some tickets were still available. Visit www.livenation.com for price and seat availability.
