Gay and Lesbian elected officials host fundraiser to support Bob Ferguson for AG

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Prominent Gay and Lesbian elected officials are scheduled to host a fundraiser to support Bob Ferguson's campaign for attorney general on July 14 at Nyhus Communications (720 3rd Ave., 12th floor) in downtown Seattle from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The host committee includes King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, State Senator Ed Murray, State Representatives Jamie Pedersen and Marko Liias, Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan, Seattle City Councilmembers Sally Clark and Tom Rasmussen, and Port Commissioner Rob Holland, as well as other LGBT community leaders including Tibor Horvath, George Cheung, Rod Hearne, Roger Nyhus, Andrew Kamins, Tim Bradbury, Andy Sachs, and Mona Smith.

According to the Ferguson campaign, all are welcome to attend.

Ferguson announced his candidacy for Washington state attorney general in mid-February. His campaign has won the endorsement of elected officials, labor organizations, environmental advocates, prominent attorneys, and civic leaders from around the state.

As the only Democrat in the race, Ferguson will likely face Republican opponent Reagan Dunn in the November 2012 election.

According to Ferguson, his campaign will offer a contrast on LGBT issues. Throughout his career, he has consistently embraced LGBT rights and is a strong proponent of marriage equality. Ferguson is an advocate for equal employment benefits and has supported legislation requiring all companies that contract with King County to provide equal benefits to their employees.

Ferguson also backed civil rights legislation that expanded equality protections to include gender identity (Dunn voted against this law).

'Bob shares our values of progressive and inclusive government. While I now serve with Bob on the County Council, I've known him for over 20 years and know he is the right candidate to protect our most vulnerable citizens, consumers, and the environment,' said McDermott.

'In the race for attorney general, there is only one candidate who our community can look to for leadership and has a proven record of standing up for LGBT people. Bob understands our community and will work to ensure our shared values are applied in the AG's office,' said Clark.

More information about the event and Bob Ferguson's campaign can be found at www.electbobferguson.com.
