posted Friday, July 1, 2011 - Volume 39 Issue 26 LettersTHANKS FOR TOUCHING ARTICLE When I saw your section 3 article on 30 years of AIDS in Seattle on June 24, it brought back lots of sad memories of shocking times. The first case diagnosed in Seattle was a friend of mine. In the years that followed, almost all of my circle of friends in 10 years of living there became victims and are all dead and gone now. How I never got infected and luckily survived at that time, I'll never know. And here I am 30 years later, not infected, but still mourning the loss of all of those awesome guys. Fortunately now it is a treatable disease, and people that I know now that have it are doing well and living, not dying. I still hope for the day that there will be a vaccine to eliminate this dreaded disease that has s shortened so many lives. Thanks for the article, not a pleasant one for me, but I just wanted to let people know that many of us are still paying the price with the personal loss of people that we thought once upon a time would be lifelong friends. Unfortunately where I am living now is in a bigoted discriminatory city in a Red state, so I ask that you don't publish my email address if you publish this letter. T. |
