OUR FLAG AND THE SPACE NEEDLE'S SITUATION Seattle's traditions of patronage to the arts and community are long established. Bagley and Virginia Wright's renowned contributions are historic, representing Seattle's best in community and love of place.

Seattle is also home to many community-based festivals and celebrations. All of this proves that the people of Seattle do care and support many charities and causes, both with and without corporate help.

The situation with the Seattle's Space Needle corporation is a PR mess.

In June [last year], Seattleites were glowing in the light of the successful defeat of Referendum 71. I was in Kerry Park overlooking the Seattle Center campus, next to the Space Needle, when they raised the rainbow flag above our iconic trademark high above the city. You could hear the cameras clicking; a look around you saw many embraces and tears.

That is what we need to remember.

Dorian Graham Muncey

Dear Ms. Brodeur:

In reference to your Friday, June 24 column, I found your arguments specious and clueless. You concede Access Printing owner Delany Bascom is legally responsible for the actions of his errant employee, and then you want to let Mr. Bascom off the hook. No!

I notice you made no mention of the Access employee being fired or suspended, without pay. From that I infer neither happened to him. Failure to materially discipline or fire is grounds for suing. The owners of Diesel have the statutory option of filing suit in King County Superior Court, which probably would be more expeditious than the Washington Human Rights Commission.

The use of "badass" or "no [B.S.]" doesn't constitute obscenity, pornography, or defamation, under the law. The Stranger is correct, when it stated Bascom was back peddling. The e-mail directly referred to "...homosexuals..." and "...the kind of lifestyle that goes against our morals...." Rarely does an attorney get their case made for them on a silver platter.

If you walked into Macy's and a male, born again Christian clerk verbally demeaned you, called you "uppity," and told you you needed to "know your place," would you just accept apologies from Macy's management or seek legal recourse? Anyone who would allow themselves to be a doormat and walk away has incredibly low self-esteem. I see no virtue or nobility in being a ninny. The gay community fought for decades to get statutory civil rights protections, in Washington. Walking away from this incident renders our legal protections worthless. Access Printing needs to be made a public example.

Sincerely,

Steven L. Kendall
