Gay student sues ex-Michigan official over stalking

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Remember that jerk Andrew Shirvell, the former Michigan assistant state attorney general? Well, in a case of what goes around comes around, the openly Gay student assembly president at the University of Michigan Shirvell targeted for his blog rants is suing him on charges of stalking and causing emotional distress.

The Detroit Free Press and AnnArbor.com reported April 7 that Chris Armstrong filed the suit against Andrew Shirvell on Friday in Washtenaw County Circuit Court.

Armstrong's attorney Deborah Gordon says in the complaint that Shirvell displayed a 'bizarre personal obsession' with Armstrong through critical blog and Facebook posts in which he claimed Armstrong was pushing a 'radical homosexual agenda.'

Although Shirvell always insisted his barrage of abuse was 'a political campaign' and 'nothing personal against Chris,' he engaged in tactics like standing outside of Armstrong's house, videotaping him, shouting him down in public, and abusing his parents and friends.

Shirvell told the Associated Press Wednesday he had no comment - no surprise there. Shirvell hasn't exactly had a love affair with the media - mainstream or otherwise - as CNN's Anderson Cooper, host of Anderson Cooper 360, famously called the embattled Shirvell a 'bully.'

According to Armstrong's attorney, he is asking for more than $25,000 in damages.

Shirvell was fired by the state in December after being accused of harassing Armstrong. He is a 2002 University of Michigan graduate.
