Queer-centric writing class at Richard Hugo House

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Local writer Katie McClendon will teach the Queer-centric writing class 'Beyond Coming Out' at Richard Hugo House (1634 11th Ave.) April 5-May 10 from 7-9 p.m.

'The LGBTQ community is filled with a variety of experiences and identities that run along a spectrum. Now that Gay and Lesbian literature is an established genre, there is an opportunity to tell stories that go beyond coming out or falling in love for the first time,' reads the class description. 'This class will explore what it means to write from an LGBTQ perspective, how to write stories that focus a lens on the specific and current experiences of LGTBQ individuals, and how to go beyond the same old stories and clich├ęs presented in the media.'

McClendon is a published poet and fiction writer and a graduate of the Bent Institute. 'I'm a fiction fanatic,' she said, 'and an extensive reader.'

'The goal of this class is to help writers identify what makes writing Queer and how to expand the voices and content of our stories to shine a light on Queer experience,' McClendon told Seattle Gay News. 'This is the first-ever class at the Hugo House targeted at a specific population, and I would love, love, love to show them that there is a need and a desire for classes like this. How can you help? Register! Tell your friends to register! Spread the word!'

McClendon says we are at a time in society, politically speaking, where 'we are starting to talk more about what happens in Queer lives. I think it is important for Queer folks to write about their experiences.'

She told SGN that the class will deal specifically with how to write fictional stories from a Queer perspective. 'We are going to look at major historical events and insert Queer characters,' said McClendon. 'We will do the same thing with fairytales and commonly known stories with straight characters and rewrite them.'
