INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Editor's note: The following letter to the editor was originally scheduled to print in the March 18 edition of the Seattle Gay News.

It was the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, and in Seattle, there was a splendid turnout for the special commemoration for the people who died in the Triangle Factory Fire that became the force behind the celebration.

There were people present from all cultures, ages, abilities, economic backgrounds - you name it - who have been doing grassroots political work for eons, as well as the people who will be carrying the concerns and battles into the next generation. The intensities ranged and raged through honoring women who have done (and continue doing) frontline work, as women have always done - not only globally but also locally, one neighbor(hood) at a time.

There was glorious food, great music, powerful words, and opportunities for people to come together and discuss what they have been battling. To bear witness to strong womyn and share, see, and hear individuals' passions in one room, together, was an extraordinary feeling.

It would be something if we didn't need to have this special day to acknowledge our continual work. Obviously, the world would need to be in a different realm, a different way of thinking, a different paradigm.

As we continue.

GAY COMMUNITY LOST A GOOD FRIEND

We have lost a good friend of the Gay community with the passing of Elizabeth Taylor.

She was one of the first Hollywood actor/actresses to call attention to AIDS and organize fundraising for people with AIDS. AMFAR was one of the most notable.

We won't see her like again, but we are all the better for it.

Kindest regards,
Lenny, founder of Chicken Soup Brigade
