Twilight Zone Live a fun and funny evening of sci-fi

by Miryam Gordon - SGN A&E Writer

THE Twilight Zone Live
Theater Schmeater
Through April 16

Theater Schmeater continues its smashing productions of actual Twilight Zone TV series episodes done live. This outing, Rob Burgess has a tremendous amount to do, as his talents are showcased in each of the three different episodes. And coincidentally enough, two of those episodes starred Burgess Meredith.

Burgess begins in the episode The Obsolete Man as Wordsworth, the title character. He has entered a strange period some time in the future, explains Tim Moore, director and Rod Serling parodist. It's a time when people are considered obsolete and therefore disposable, and are at the mercy of The State.

Jon Lutyens is the State Chancellor who declares that the condemned's vocation as librarian is no longer necessary since there are no more books! Wordsworth is given the leeway to choose his own method of execution and its timing. But Wordsworth has been underestimated, and twists his destiny into an ending more subversive than any life he could continue to lead.

Time Enough At Last features Burgess as an everyman, Henry Bemis, who is completely henpecked (as they say) by wife Lisa Viertel and boss Ashley Bagwell, and told he should stop reading. Do we sense a theme to the evening here? Bemis works at a bank and hides in the vault to read. Then there is an explosion and Bemis might be the last man on earth. But does that give him time enough to read?

The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street begins with a bunch of neighbors (the above cast mentioned, plus John Q. Smith, Megan Ahiers, Tracy Leigh, Deniece Bleha, Lisa Branham, and J.D. Lloyd) rushing out of their houses after they experience a total energy shutdown (no electricity, no gas, no cars will start) following a possible spaceship flyby overhead. A little girl (Ahiers) postulates that the alien stories she has heard all seem to have some group that infiltrates Earth ahead of an alien invasion. The invaders have been made to look human, but are not human! This causes all the neighbors to begin to look at each other's behavior and assume the worst.

The Twilight Zone productions are always directed by Tim Moore, and he plays the Rod Serling narrator excellently. Sets are minimalistic but always work to set the tone and playing space, and the shows even have '60s style commercials reminding folks to buy Twilight Zone cocktails in the lobby at intermission! Each Twilight Zone episode was written to impart a moralistic thought, many completely applicable to today's world. The actors always take the show seriously, but even so, it's fun and sometimes funny to watch.

Tickets were selling well, even before opening, so you might want to hurry and get some. It's one of their best-selling events at The Schmee. For more information, go to www.schmeater.org or www.brownpapertickets.com or call 206-324-5801.
