Barcelona dedicates LGBT Memorial

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Mayor Jordi Hereu of Barcelona dedicated a memorial to LGBT victims of persecution in central Ciutadella Park on Sunday morning, March 20.

The pink marble triangle slants slightly upward toward the observer, with an inscription in Catalan that reads, 'In memory of the Gays, Lesbians and Transexual persons who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history, Barcelona 2011.'

The dedication ceremony featured show tunes in several European languages, performed by Barcelona's Gay men's chorus.

Mayor Hereu spoke of the history of Barcelona as a haven for persecuted groups and individuals, and of the city's respect for LGBT people.

After the festivities, local LGBT groups placed bunches of flowers around the monument.

The location was a compromise after the Roman Catholic Church objected to the proposed installation of the memorial in front of Antoní Gaudi's Sagrada Familia Basilica.

The square in front of Sagrada Familia was the site of a Gay and Lesbian kiss-in when Pope Benedict XVI dedicated Sagrada Familia as a basilica in November 2010.

The Barcelona city government had originally suggested that the square would be a suitable site for its projected LGBT monument.

In response, Spanish church leaders staged a series of mammoth protest rallies, including one in January featuring Pope Benedict speaking via satellite feed.

Barcelona is now one of five European cities with LGBT monuments.

Berlin has a stone monument to LGBT victims of the Holocaust next to the main Holocaust memorial. Frankfurt and Cologne also have LGBT monuments.

Rome and the Hague have set up LGBT memorials, but one planned for Vienna was later cancelled.

Barcelona is Spain's second-largest city and is the capital of the autonomous region of Cataluña. The Catalan language is distinct from the Castilian Spanish spoken in most of the country.

Barcelona was also a stronghold of Spanish anarchism and socialism during the Spanish Civil War period of the 1930s.

Like Spain's national government, Barcelona's city government is controlled by socialists.

Barcelona's Mayor Jordi Hereu i Boher represents the Socialist Party of Cataluña, which is affiliated with the Prime Minister Zapatero's Spanish Socialist Workers Party.

Zapatero has been prime minister since April 2004. He introduced and passed Spain's marriage equality and abortion laws, and has become the main nemesis of Spanish Catholic leaders.

While 73% of Spaniards still identify as Roman Catholics according to the Spanish Center of Sociological Research, most do not attend church regularly. Some 22% of Spaniards say they have no religion.
