The X Factor to hold Seattle auditions

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Wanna be on TV? Sure you do. More importantly, looking to launch a music career? Then get those chops fine-tuned because The X Factor is coming to Seattle for an all-day casting call on April 20. The show, the latest bright idea by Simon Cowell, is already a U.K. hit and premieres stateside this fall on FOX. Open auditions will take place at Key Arena, but you must pre-register by April 19 and pick up a mandatory wristband that same day. Cowell left American Idol last season, primarily to get this new vehicle running. Besides Seattle, auditions are scheduled for Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Newark. The X-Factor hotline is 1-855-345-5678, but will not be in operation until the first auditions are held on March 27.

I'm about to excite both fans of Green Day and Broadway musicals with news that American Idiot is headed to Seattle next year, as in 2012. The theatrical production, inspired by the Grammy-winning band's acclaimed album of the same name, is set to bow June 5 at the Paramount Theatre for a six-day run. Ticket prices and on-sale date weren't available at press time.

Bumbershoot woke up and smelled the coffee! After years of altering its ticketing process and shuffling the bigger talent to Memorial Stadium, the homegrown festival recently announced the reinstallment of its all-day single ticket plan instead of the tedious (and confusing) system of requiring both a festival ticket and mainstage pass to enter the major shows. Even better news is Bumbershoot's re-use of Key Arena to house the main acts, meaning we won't have to freeze waiting for Mary J. Blige to hit the stage. Other smart changes include Decibel Festival organizers curating the electronic portion of the Labor Day weekend lineup, and larger venues for the comedy acts - translated, less 'house full' signs at the miniscule theaters where they usually put performers like David Cross, Patten Oswalt, and Nick Swardson. Expect the 2011 Bumbershoot lineup to be announced in April or May, if not leaked sooner here in The Music Lounge.

The Maine has announced a return to Seattle: a co-headlining gig with fellow rockers Augustana on June 11 at The Showbox Market. Lead singer John O'Callaghan revealed to me last year that 'it's rather flattering' to be hit on by male fans, and this was after he picked The Black Keys' Brothers for best album of 2010 and Dexter as one of his favorite TV shows - I could live happily ever after with this guy, or Ryan Phillipe. Visit www.showboxonline.com for ticket information, and note that a special 'Artist Arena VIP' pre-sale package is already underway that includes a ticket, early entry, and signed lithograph. A second interview with the Tempe, Arizona-based group will probably land here in The Music Lounge sometime in May.

Two other concerts just announced: Cage the Elephant at The Showbox SoDo (June 9) - they sold out their previous Seattle stop a year ago - and Raphael Saadiq at The Showbox Market (April 13).

Finally, if you didn't see this week's episode of Glee, you missed a touching moment when newly formed lovebirds Kurt and Blaine (Chris Colfer and Darren Criss) sang a cover of Hey Monday's 'Candles.' This happened minutes before the Dalton Academy boys shared a kiss, broadcast on a major TV network, thank you very much! Meanwhile, Sam (Chord Overstreet) remains straight - damn it.
