Arnaldo! returns to Julia's with a tribute to Eartha Kit

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

C'est Si Bon! A Tribute
to Eartha Kitt
Julia's on Broadway
March 13

Join Bistro Award-winning Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse at Julia's on Broadway on March 13 as he pays homage to his cabaret muse, the one and only Miss Eartha Kitt. Arnaldo's own vocal styling interprets the song of Miss Kitt and emulates her style in C'est Si Bon! A Tribute to Eartha Kitt.

'Eartha Kitt is so unique,' Arnaldo! told Seattle Gay News. 'She is a survivor and she also has a strong sense of self. It is that uniqueness that first attracted me to her - who else sings her material, really? Even those who lip-sync her can't get her right most of the time. There is a very thin line for her to be portrayed as camp and unique. My respect for her as an artist and a human being supersedes everything else, so what I do onstage translates organically from that respect.'

Musical director Bob Bruneau and Seattle bass player Bruce Phares will join Arnaldo! as he performs his well-known tribute to Eartha this weekend.

'Cabaret covers a lot of musical genres, from jazz to musical theatre to comedy to rock to classical. & It is the variety and sometimes the element of surprise that keep the audiences coming back,' Arnaldo! said.

'It is also, at least for me, the personal connection that you get when you see a cabaret show,' he continued. 'I want my audience to know that they are part of my family - that they are welcome and we are here together musically and want to make them feel good when they leave the show.'

Arnaldo! knows audiences, that's for sure. His act is one of the most celebrated and booked in the genre.

Arnaldo! got his start with the Seattle Men's Chorus as a soloist. In 2009, he was asked to come back as a guest performer at the group's holiday concert to sing 'Santa Baby.'

'To come back as a guest performer and to do the encore for the holiday show was an honor, and the love and support from the chorines and Dennis Coleman were unbelievable,' Arnaldo! recalled.

Last year, Arnaldo! had his San Francisco and Los Angeles debuts. Both sold out. In October, he performed in New York City (in 2008 he won the coveted Bistro Award for cabaret) and returned to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after a six-year absence.

'The audiences that came to see the show were so very appreciative and knew their cabaret materials because of the international flavor of the audience,' Arnaldo! said. 'While I was in Puerto Vallarta, I found out that the San Francisco Bay Times' [column] 'Jazz & Cocktails' chose me as one of their top cabaret acts that played in San Francisco in 2010.'

So far, 2011 has been an amazing ride for Arnaldo! as he has sold out shows in L.A. and Palm Springs, California.

The good news for us is Arnaldo! is back in Seattle to perform for us!

'I am glad that the cabaret audience is finally growing, and that live performances are alive and well in Seattle,' he said. 'I am truly trying hard to get Seattle on the National Cabaret map and I am glad to see a proliferation of great performers who are using cabaret as venue to express themselves artistically. I am also very thankful to organizations who continually champion good performances like the Seattle Gay News, the Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association and the International Cabaret Conference at Yale University.'
