GSBA holds 2011 Business & Humanitarian Awards Dinner

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) celebrated the cream of the crop at the organization's 2011 Business and Humanitarian Awards Dinner at the Westin Seattle (1900 5th Ave.) on February 24.

For 30 years, the organization's Business and Humanitarian Awards Dinner has celebrated the nexus of equality and diversity in business along with the spirit of philanthropy and volunteerism.

'There are so many people doing amazing work in this community, I think it's crucial that we recognize how their effort impacts our lives,' said Jerome Bader, director of marketing and external relations for GSBA. 'We are talking about individuals and organizations that not only practice the notion of giving back, but define it. I'm honored that the GSBA can tell their story, that we can help the world to know that these people are making a difference every day.'

It is in that spirit that the GSBA proudly announced this year's recipients of the Business and Humanitarian Awards. This year's honorees are: Business of the Year: Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria, Joe Fugere; New Business of the Year: The Lobby Bar, Curtis Bigelow and Paul Villa; Business Leader of the Year: Joseph Irons, Irons Brothers Construction; Corporate Citizen: Jennifer Moran, Carter Subaru & Carter VW; Community Leader of The Year: Kim Bogucki, Detective Seattle Police Department; Nonprofit of the Year: Entre Hermanos, Marcos Martinez; Special Recognition: Voice for Social Justice, Major Margaret Witt; and President's Award: Michael Jaworski, Rain City Web Tech.

'These leaders have truly inspired us to reach higher and remind us that success isn't only measured by the numbers on the balance sheet, but by what they can accomplish for the community,' said GSBA officials of the 2011 honorees.

U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) was the keynote speaker at the event and in a particularly touching and historic moment, Colonel Grethe Cammermeyer, a Lesbian icon, honored Major Witt for her efforts in the landmark repeal of DADT.

The GSBA has been the LGBT and allied business and professional chamber of commerce since 1981. With over 1,000 members, the GSBA is the largest business chamber of its kind in the U.S. More than a chamber, GSBA is a vibrant community organization with a broad and diverse membership base. GSBA's mission is to combine business development, social action and leadership to expand economic opportunities for the LGBT community and those who support equality for all.
