William M. Hamilton

William M. Hamilton, age 67, previously of Capitol Hill, Seattle, passed away peacefully at his home in the Uplands Retirement Village of Pleasant Hill, TN, on November 21, 2010, from osteosarcoma. Always a learner, Bill's educational achievements include an A.B. in Biology from Hamilton College, a M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Yale, and a Certificate of Study (focusing on the interface between Christian ethics and medical ethics) from Episcopal Divinity School and Harvard. He also has an MSW from the UW.

Bill had a rich and varied work history during which he employed his many skills. A sampling of this work includes HIV/AIDS-related research, studies, testing, and treatment, and with several others, he co-founded the Seattle Gay Clinic whose off-shoot became known as the Chicken Soup Brigade. Filled with a deep and abiding compassion and concern for others, Bill managed to fuse his love of science with his love of humanity.

After retiring, he served as the director of the Pilgrim Referral and Resource Center on Capitol Hill in Seattle from 1994 to 2000. This program served the needy, and Bill offered his services as a volunteer. Bill's hobbies included reading, writing, long conversations with friends - especially his partner Mark and dear friend Gerry, showering affection and care on his beloved cat Buddha and lovebird Toby, and helping the elderly. Bill was a very devoted friend, and he is greatly missed.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Bill's Life will be held on Saturday, February 26, at 2 p.m. at Prospect Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC), on Capitol Hill, 1919 E. Prospect Street, Seattle. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Capitol Hill Community Resource Center (c/o Prospect Church, Seattle, WA 98112) or the American Cancer Society.
