Union calls for boycott of Red Lion Airport Hotel

On January 25, a delegation of Red Lion Airport Hotel workers delivered a petition to their HR director announcing the official boycott of the hotel.

Red Lion Airport workers are represented by UNITE HERE Local 8, the hotel and restaurant employees' union.

The boycott petition was circulated by the hotel's union committee, with 89% of the employees signing on.

Hotel workers, many of whom have worked at the Red Lion for over a decade, are fighting for contract language that would protect their jobs and their union if the hotel or Gregory's restaurant were to be sold, or if a subcontractor took over the work.

The employer has maintained strong opposition to language that would protect long-term employees from having the quality of their jobs eroded if the hotel were to contract out the restaurant to a separate company.

In fact, the company is planning to do just that: get rid of the restaurant without protecting their workers.

Hotel employees are asking the community to support them in their fight for fair treatment.

'We are asking the public, especially unions and organizations that do significant business at this hotel, to take their business elsewhere beginning on February 10. By joining together to boycott this employer, our entire community will help these workers win what they deserve in their new contract,' UNITE HERE said in a statement issued on January 26.

UNITE HERE Local 8 won a significant victory with its 2007 Westin contract. It was the first union contract in the country to provide explicit protections for Transgender workers.

UNITE HERE also endorsed marriage equality in a March 2008 resolution passed unanimously by the union's national executive board. The union contributed significant resources to the No on Prop 8 campaign in California and the Approve Referendum 71 campaign in our state.

Pride At Work hopes our community will build on our relationship with UNITE HERE and support the Red Lion Airport Hotel workers' boycott.

The Doubletree Hotel and the Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel are union hotels near SeaTac Airport, and are available for the community's business.

Other union hotels in the state are listed on the union's website, www.unitehere8.org.

Contact Sarah Warren at swarren@unitehere.org or 206-470-2978 to discuss how this boycott might affect your business at the Red Lion.

Pride At Work is an LGBT labor organization. It is affiliated with the AFL-CIO but includes members of AFL-CIO, Change To Win, and independent unions, and non-union allies.
