GLSEN/WA to host Seattle/Puget Sound Regional GSA Summit

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Washington will be hosting a regional leadership summit at University Prep (8000 25th Ave. NE) on MLK Day, January 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is from 8-9 a.m.

'Educate yourself on new and interesting ideas that can help you work with your school, community, or those you come in contact with. GLSEN provides curriculum ideas, sensitivity trainings, and resources for all educators, students, advisors, and interested adults,' announced GLSEN Washington officials in a written statement.

Regional conferences serve to help GSA groups network with each other, gain information, plan group activities, set goals, and encourage participation in activities that further our goal of safer school environments for all students.

This year, the student program is as follows:

o Introduction to PFLAG/Coming out to your friends/Family
o Youth Suicide Prevention Program
o GSA rights
o Making your school a 'Safe Place'
o Trans 101
o Viewing of Bullied and discussion
o GSA networking
o Dating and relationships
o Self-defense

At this year's educator session, 'Social Justice Training: Our Association in Action: Creating Change Through Social Justice,' educators will benefit from a hands-on, interactive workshop to empower members to apply the principles of social justice when confronted with injustice (social oppression) in the workplace, the association and society at large. The objectives of the workshop are to explore why social justice principles are relevant to National Education Association (NEA) members and their work, identify forms of injustice (social oppression) in the workplace, the association, and society at large and suggest ways members can help create a more 'just' learning environment for students and educators. Participants will leave with ideas and resources for implementing the principles of social justice in their workplace and classroom.

This session will be held at the same time as the GSA Leadership Summit at the same location.

There will be advisor and student break out sessions. Clock hours will be available for teachers and provided by Puget Sound ESD. Cost will be $5 (suggested) or $15 if you need lunch, or pay what you can. GLSEN Washington officials say they won't turn anyone away.

It is suggested that you bring lunch, if you choose not to buy, as there are no restaurants or dining establishments within walking distance. You can choose to pay online or pay at the door.
