Pride Foundation to award more than $400,000 in scholarship money

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Pride Foundation, in partnership with the GSBA Scholarship Fund, announced on January 4 they will award more than $400,000 in the coming months to LGBTQ and straight allied students either from or studying in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The scholarship program is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

'Providing scholarships for people that believe in LGBTQ equality is critical for ensuring our community's long-term success by supporting existing leaders and nurturing future ones," said Anthony Papini, scholarship program director at Pride Foundation. 'There's been a lot of talk about how 'it gets better' for LGBTQ youth. The Pride Foundation and GSBA scholarship program is one way of fulfilling the promise of 'it gets better' by enabling students to fulfill their potential."

However, according to Pride Foundation officials, grants are not only for LGBTQ youth. Straight allies who have demonstrated leadership in LGBTQ issues are welcome to apply as well as students of all ages. In 2010, the youngest scholarship recipient was 17 years of age, and the oldest was 54.

Last year, $342,000 was awarded to 110 students - a 29% increase over 2009. Since 1993, more than $2 million in scholarships to support education and leadership development has been awarded.

Pride Foundation would like to encourage you to share this excellent opportunity for students of any age or sexual orientation from or studying in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington who are pursuing any post-secondary education. There are 50 different types of scholarships with awards up to $10,000 - but only one simple web-based application to complete. Applications must be submitted by January 31 at 5 p.m. PST.

The online application, guidelines, and additional details for the 2011 scholarship cycle are available at www.PrideFoundation.org. Pride Foundation supports the LGBTQ community in the Pacific Northwest by providing grants and scholarships to LGBTQ-related projects and individuals. Donor-supported Pride Foundation is the largest LGBTQ community foundation of its kind having granted more than $18 million in grants and scholarships since 1985.
