Thirty Seconds to Mars, Cher, Janet Jackson, KWJZ

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It's not entirely confirmed, but at press time it was as close to a sure thing as you can get. An interview with rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars is likely to be featured next week, here in The Music Lounge. The MTV VMA-winning trio, fronted by Hollywood hottie Jared Leto, is en route to Seattle for a performance at the Paramount Theatre on January 18 - they're out promoting last year's This is War album featuring the hit single 'Kings and Queens,' though they're better known for the international smash 'Beautiful Lie.' Unless something very wrong happens between now and next Friday, look for an interview with Thirty Seconds to Mars in the January 14 issue.

Seattle restaurant Il Fornaio and local station Warm 106.9 FM are Cher-ing the love this season, providing fans a chance to win a trip to see the Gay icon in her final concert at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Prize includes airfare, hotel accommodations, and concert tickets for two Cher fanatics. All you need to do is enter to win in person at Il Fornaio in downtown Seattle (600 Pine Street), offering a seasonally composed Friuli menu by chef Franz Junga, or log onto www.warm1069.com and click on the 'Contests' tab - Bob Mackie gown not included.

Janet Jackson has announced the third location and date of her upcoming world tour: Taipei, Taiwan on February 18. The anticipated live event kicks off February 7 in Singapore and then moves to Hong Kong on February 14.

Smooth jazz has left the building. That's right, radio station KWJZ ended its run just before the New Year. Responsible for introducing Seattleites to artists like Sade, Norah Jones, Chris Botti, and Esperanza Spalding, the station gradually declined in listeners and eventually in ratings, which usually determine the value of advertisement. Just two months ago, at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, singer-pianist Spencer Day was introduced to the stage by a KWJZ staff member, and now its been forever wiped off the Seattle music map. Top-40 music immediately replaced the smooth jazz format - yet another sign of the commercial times we live in.

On a related note, Jazz Alley has bumped all late shows to 9:30 p.m. (from 10 p.m.). Its upcoming schedule includes WAR, Ain't Misbehavin' musical revue, David Sanborn w/ Joey DeFrancesco, Betty LaVette, and Pete Escovedo featuring percussion diva Sheila E.

The Glee episode on Super Bowl Sunday will feature a performance of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Destiny Child's 'Bills, Bills, Bills' with a guest appearance by CBS news anchor Katie Couric, as well as the USC Marching Band and 500 extras. It's said to be the most expensive post-Super Bowl television show in history. Sounds like a Gleeky good time!

Among this week's concert announcements, Justin Townes Earle will play at The Crocodile on February 19, Miniature Tigers are slated to perform at The Crocodile on March 30, and a second show is added for Girl Talk at The Showbox SoDo on May 16 - the first is sold out.

Finally, Seattle rocker Eddie Vedder is in the early running (again!) for an Oscar nomination, as his self-penned 'Better Days' from the film Eat Pray Love has been shortlisted in the Best Original Song category. Chris Martin's 'Me and Tennessee' (Country Strong), Jonsi's 'Sticks and Stones' (How to Train Your Dragon), Beck and Devandra Banhart's 'Life During Wartime' (Life During Wartime), and Christina Aguilera's 'Bound to You' (Burlesque), along with 36 other compositions, compete for five spots on the final ballot. Oscar nominations will be announced on January 25.
