Equality Utah named as one of 2010's Gay Rights Heroes

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Change.org, an online activism platform for social change that raises awareness about important causes and connects people to opportunities for powerful action, named Equality Utah as one of 2010's Gay Rights Heroes.

'When 2010 started, Equality Utah put forward a bold statement: In 12 months' time, they would work like hell to make sure that 10 Utah cities/towns/municipalities enacted non-discrimination ordinances that included protections on the basis of sexual orientation,' wrote Change.org editor Michael Jones. 'Sure enough, they put their money where their mouth was and got it done.'

Equality Utah works to secure equal rights and protections for LGBT Utahns and their families. Toward this mission, Equality Utah drafts legislation and coordinates efforts to ensure its passage; lobbies legislators and other elected officials; builds coalitions, educates, empowers, and energizes individuals and organizations to actively participate in the political process.

Equality Utah's policy areas include bias crimes, HIV/AIDS and healthcare, marriage/partner recognition, nondiscrimination, parenting and family, racial and economic justice, Transgender and youth issues.

In December 2010, Grand County became the 10th Utah area to enact an inclusive non-discrimination ordinance. 'And Equality Utah's work isn't done yet,' said Jones. 'Together with other LGBT activists in the state, they have their eyes on Ogden, hoping that the city will become the 11th in the state to enact sweeping anti-discrimination protections.'

Equality Utah was just one in a long list put together by Change.org's editor, who wrote, 'From historic victories in Congress to bold individual acts for equality, 2010 was quite the year to remember.'

Jones then recognized Constance McMillen, Dan Savage and the folks at the 'It Gets Better' Project, Wendy Walsh and Tammy Aaberg, Kelly Glossip, all the players in the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' debate, Frank Martin Gill, Azwan Ismail, GLAD (Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders), and Ted Olson, David Boies, and the American Foundation for Equal Rights for their work.

'Of course, this just a quick snapshot of some of the major forces for LGBT equality in 2010. & This list could go on,' concluded Jones.
