Florida governor celebrates inauguration with prayer and bigotry
by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer Florida's new governor, Rick Scott, attended a prayer breakfast and was then sworn into office on January 4.

He then went to his office and issued a series of executive orders which he hoped would set the tone for his administration of the state.

With one order, Scott seized control of all state action in Florida by mandating that no state agency issue any new rules or spend any money without his explicit approval.

Another order, EO 11-04, limits state nondiscrimination policies only to the categories of race, gender, creed, color, and national origin.

Scott removed the categories of "handicap" and "martial status" from the state policy.

Those two categories are protected by Florida's Civil Rights Act, and many advocacy groups have been working to add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the language as well, according to the South Florida Gay News.

"Pregnancy," added to the list of protected categories by a Florida state court decision, was also excised by Scott.

"Governor Scott did not even include all of the classifications listed in the Florida Civil Rights Act - let alone sexual orientation and gender identity," said Palm Beach Human Rights Council President Rand Hoch.

Scott was the Tea Party candidate in the race for Florida governor, narrowly defeating Democrat Alex Sink. He is anti-Gay and anti-choice.

He was also CEO of the world's largest for-profit healthcare company, Columbia/HCA. Scott resigned in 1997 in a billing fraud scandal. His company was forced to pay the federal government $600 million after admitting to 14 felonies.
