State Democrats recognize Stonewall Democrats as official Gay caucus
State Democrats recognize Stonewall Democrats as official Gay caucus
Formerly known as the Harvey Muggy Stonewall Democrats, the group convened an official caucus during the quarterly meeting of the Washington State Democrats

Stonewall Democrats became the [Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender] Caucus of the Washington State Democratic Party at the WSDC Conference on September 16th, in Everett, Washington. The Stonewall organization is dedicated to fighting for strong, pro-GBLT stances by the party; increasing the number of GBLT Democrats in elected positions state-wide; and helping GBLT activists get involved with their local Democratic party.

Formerly known as the Harvey Muggy Stonewall Democrats, the group convened an official caucus during the quarterly meeting of the WS Democrats. Transitional officers were elected and plans made for a future meetings as well as outreach to the GLBT community in Washington. Having this recognized caucus facilitates the groups formally recognizing and supporting GLBT Democrats.

Stonewall Democrat booths were present at Pride Festivals over the summer, from Seattle to Vancouver and Yakima, including Tacoma's "Out In The Park," and the greatly expanded Kitsap Pride Festival. Greg Gallo and Julie Goldberg initiated collection of contact information from Pride festival participants and added those names to a growing email list. Goldberg, formerly on the staff of Howard Dean's presidential campaign in Washington State, constructed a website for the revitalized Stonewall group at http://www.stonewalldemswa.org/.

A Stonewall kick-off last July drew 36 participants at the Timberline, where Gallo and Goldberg convened activists from around the state. Also present were the last Harvey Muggy Chair Ken Kadlec, openly Gay state legislators Ed Murray (D-Seattle), Joe McDermott (D-Seattle), Joe Moeller (D-Vancouver), and openly Bisexual King County Council candidate Geri Hawkins. The group continued to meet, email and hold phone conferences, all culminating in the formation of the caucus.

The new transitional board holding office on an interim basis until November 2005 consists of Goldberg, Chair; Kadlec, Treasurer; Anita Latch of Gig Harbor Secretary, who was also assigned to represent the Washington Stonewall Democrats Caucus at the Washington State Democrats Central Committee.

Final election of an Executive board will be held Friday Nov. 11th, at 7 p.m., during the Democratic State Conference in Grays Harbor County. Future meetings will continue to coincide with those of the WSDCC. In January the WSDCC and Stonewall Democrats will convene in Ellensberg. The June meeting will be in Yakima and next September the group will meet in Federal Way.Stonewall Democrats also plans to hold meetings to coincide with other GLBT functions in Seattle and in other regions of Washington.

The first regional chapter of the Washington Stonewall Democrats held its kick-off meeting Sunday, September 25 on the Kitsap Peninsula. A second regional chapter in the Seattle area should get underway this year as well. New members are urged to join via the group web page so they can receive notification of upcoming organizational and social events.
