Firefighters heat up Purr

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

The weather was near freezing everywhere but Purr Cocktail Lounge on Thursday, December 16, when 11 Washington State firefighters arrived at the Gay bar with their equipment for the launch of the 2011 Washington State Council of Fire Fighters (WSCFF) Burn Foundation Firefighters Calendar. Both male and female Washington Firefighters signed calendars, chatted with patrons and posed for pictures.

'The burn foundation is a 501 (c) (3) charity organized in 1987. We provide funding for burn research and burn prevention programs through a system of grants. We have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Harborview Medical Center [and the] University of Washington,' said Rod Heivilin, Executive Director of the Burn Foundation.

'We provide grants to fire departments to provide smoke detectors for low income and elderly residents, and the firefighters install them in homes where they are needed. We also provide funding for a week long summer camp for children who have suffered moderate to severe burn injuries,' Heivilin told SGN.

This is why there's been a calendar for 16 years now. The calendar, which has become an annual tradition for many, not just in the Gay community, serves as the organization's primary fundraiser.

'The calendar participants are all career firefighters from the State of Washington,' Heivilin told SGN. 'They compete for a spot on the calendar at a judging event usually held in May.'

In addition to Gay venues, firefighters can be seen autographing calendars at Macy's and Barnes & Noble in downtown Seattle, the Northwest Women's Show, the Woodinville Women's Show and several malls throughout the state. When a firefighter volunteers to be a part of the calendar, they also volunteer to do 40+ signing events all on their own time. Firefighters do it because they are passionate about the cause.

The calendars can be bought online or at most Barnes & Nobles locations in the state of Washington. But if you missed the Purr event and you're looking to track the firefighters down to meet them personally, visit the calendar's website at www.firefightercalendar.com.

Calendars cost $13.95 and can be purchased through the website above.
