A Miami-based Latino evangelical church has filed an FCC protest against the Spanish-language TV network Univision because the network aired a special featuring Ricky Martin.
According to the complaint, Univision aired a show with 'pornographic, indecent or obscene' content.
'As people who value the principles that gave birth to this nation,' the church's press release says, 'we have decided to say 'enough' with these shows that violate the innocence of our kids and promote confusion at a time in which our youth are developing.'
Claiming to speak for 'the Latino people of South Florida,' the church complained that the Martin interview 'presents sexual promiscuity and homosexuality as a gift of life, and an apparent blessing during a time when families are together, openly addressing adolescents and teen viewers.'
The church also called for a picket at Univision headquarters on December 18.
According to Andres Duque at Blabbeando blog, some 200 people turned up at the protest.
'The signs seem to have been printed by the same person and distributed to participants,' Duque noted.
All were in Spanish and were translated by Duque as 'UNIVISION, CHANGE YOUR WAYS,' 'U.S.: Return to God and he who blessed you,' and 'RICKY: You mess up our children's heads.'
Univision's weekly interview show Aqui y Ahora (Here and There) did a special with Martin that aired on November 2.
Martin was interviewed by respected Latina journalist Maria Elena Salinas.
In the interview, Martin revealed that he hooked up with and was eventually dumped by Mexican rockstar Alejandra Guzman.
He also revealed that his relationship with Rebecca De Alba did, in fact, have a sexual side to it, in spite of rumors that she was merely a 'beard' to hide his real sexual orientation.
In the most controversial part of the interview, Martin talked for the first time about his first boyfriend.
According to Martin, he was willing to 'drop everything' for the man, who eventually 'broke his heart.'
The man, an unnamed Latino radio DJ, advised Martin to keep working at his career. That left him 'depressed and confused' and pushed him further into the closet, Martin said.
Martin declined to answer questions about his current love life, however.
Martin came out in March this year. He later told Oprah Winfrey that he was in a relationship, but preferred to keep his boyfriend out of the spotlight.
