A Dyke About Town: Fun Gay community Christmas traditions

by Mercy Moozemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Ham for the Holidays
Mercy and Cuteness love their long tradition of going to see Ham for the Holidays. They always get a lot of laughs from their evening at Theatre Off Jackson. The December 3 performance attracted them. Lisa Koch and Peggy Platt were well-supported by the wonderful pianist, D.J. Gommels, and actor Michael Oaks.

This year's show had a lot of new material. Mercy liked the group, Mud's goose poop car. The game show 'Deck the Paul's,' involving Ru Paul, Rand Paul, and Paula Abdul, was fun. Koch's song 'Pink Slip for Christmas' was timely. Cuteness loved Peggy Platt's costume for Spuddacus, including a red wiener dog purse. She also liked the chariots, complete with horse's heads and paper plate wheels. Her favorite line was the satirical, 'And the real L-word represents all Lesbians."

Seattle Men's Chorus
Seattle Men's Chorus Christmas concert at Benaroya Hall is another satisfying tradition. Mercy and Cuteness saw it on December 5. Cuteness found parts of it slow-paced and not well-lit. One high point was 'Las Posadas Navidenas,' complete with dance. Another was 'The Twelve Days of Christmas,' performed by Captain Smartypants. Mercy liked the lecture on bullying as part of Holiday Glee. Another high point was 'Toy Shop,' written by Eric Lane Barnes and performed by Captain Smartypants. 'Joy to the World' ended the concert well with a delicious solo by Ritchie Wooley. The topical encore, 'The Marriage Dance,' took the chorus over the top, which is their gift.

Seattle Rainbow Contra Dance
Come to Seattle Rainbow Contra's gender-free dance on Sunday, December 19, at Washington Hall (153 14th Avenue). There is a free lesson at 3 p.m. The dance runs from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $8.

This will be Rainbow Contra's last dance at Washington Hall. They will be dancing at the Oddfellows Hall in historic Ballard in 2011.

They suggest folks bring a water bottle. They also ask that folks do not wear perfumes or colognes as some folks in the community have severe allergic reactions to scented products.

Beggar of Love
Mercy enjoyed Lee Lynch's new novel Beggar of Love very much. Lynch has been writing Lesbian fiction for 50 years and has seasoned delightfully. The book starts with the end of a 30-year relationship, then goes back to the beginning of it. It also includes some childhood scenes, in which the child's eye views is accurate. Settings in New York and New Hampshire are well-drawn. Mercy found the theme of an alcoholic and sex-addicted dyke getting sober appealing. Mercy and Cuteness have an argument going whether a person who identifies as butch can be attracted to another butch. Mercy says no. Cuteness says yes. There is an example in Lynch's book that supports Cuteness.

Land of the Sweets: Burlesque Nutcracker
Mercy and Cuteness found Land of the Sweets: Burlesque Nutcracker at the Triple Door a most fun variation on another Christmas tradition last year. They plan to go again next year. One of their favorite drag queens, Waxie Moon, will be part of it again. It runs from December 11 through December 24. You can get your tickets at www.thetripledoor.net.
