Tea Party to GOProud: Thanks for the help, now fuck off!
by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

In an ironic conclusion to a campaign season in which it cast itself as the 'Gay Tea Party,' Gay Republican group GOProud was publicly slapped down by leaders of the real Tea Party.

In a letter published on November 22, Tea Party Nation and 180 other Tea Party affiliated groups and individuals disavowed GOProud, which they described as 'a non-Tea Party group & claiming to speak for the Tea Party movement.'

Tea Party Nation's letter was addressed to 'the Republican leadership on Capitol Hill,' and claims to 'tell you [the Republican leadership] what this movement wants.'

What the movement wants - according to Tea Party Nation - is seven things. Number seven is 'to fight the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'

'The policy has worked well for the last 15 years,' Tea Party Nations said in their letter. 'There is no reason to change.'

Tea Party Nation wrote in response to a previous letter from GOProud to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and incoming House Speaker John Boehner urging them to concentrate on 'issues of economic freedom and limited government' - as opposed to 'social issues,' presumably including trying to save the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy.

'We urge you to stay focused on the issues that got you and your colleagues elected and to resist the urge to run down any social issue rabbit holes in order to appease the special interests,' GOProud wrote in its letter.

The delightful irony is that GOProud spent most of the 2010 campaign season appeasing the very right-wing 'special interests' it warned McConnell and Boehner not to embrace.

They endorsed Glenn Beck's Christian-right 'Restoring Honor' rally in August.

They invited right-wing talking head Ann Coulter to their HomoCon convention in September, and cheered her as she told them marriage equality is out of the question.

They bought media ads supporting anti-Gay Republican Sean Bielat against Rep. Barney Frank.

They dismissed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) as just another big government scheme.

They embraced Sarah Palin, and on November 17 they publicly defended the homophobic Facebook rant of her daughter, Willow.

All of this should endear them to their straight Tea Party friends, but apparently none of it is enough.

In the eyes of the Tea Party, no amount of groveling can compensate for being Queer. From their point of view, GOProud earned absolutely nothing in return for giving up the last remnants of their dignity and self-respect.

In the 2010 election, some 30% of LGBT voters cast ballots for Republican candidates. GOProud claimed this as a great achievement. So far, it doesn't seem to be working for them.
